We can throw in some right stinkers, lads. A good performance against Dundee put us in the driving seat for the title, but we undid all that good work with an horrific performance at home to Hibs. It wasn't until the final ten minutes (when I went route one) that we actually got a shot on target. We were fucking woeful and the title race was blown wide open again.
Then we went to Hearts and gave them a bit of a pasting. It was the perfect response to the Hibs debacle with Mallan, Tavernier and Quitongo all in inspired form.
We went into the Aberdeen game knowing that we could win the league if we beat them and Dundee lost at home to Celtic. Our goal difference is significantly better than theirs, so even a draw for them would basically seal the title. A good performance meant that we saw off Aberdeen with relative ease and for a long, long time it looked like the title would be wrapped up. That was until Dundee got a 93rd minute winner versus Celtic and all of a sudden our lead is back to a point and we have to go to Celtic Park and get something.
Aaaaand then we have the Celtic game. Last game of the season. Fighting for the title. First thing you do is keep it tight, right? 1-0 down in 90 seconds and 2-0 down after four minutes. I changed it immediately, but we just played into their hands and they battered us.
However, HOW-FUCKING-EVER, Dundee could only draw away at Hibs which meant we won the title on goal difference!
It's more than a little bit bittersweet, as I really don't feel we deserved it and, had it not been for Trent's starts to the season, I very much doubt we'd have come close. At times I got us singing a perfect tune, but there were other times where we just didn't get off the team bus. I got us over the line, somehow, but Trent deserves the credit for this. It was a real battle for me at times.
Celtic continued their unbeaten streak against us in the cup final and I fucking hate them for it. This was easily the best we'd played against them and we were five minutes from winning the cup. I had instructed the team to be defensive, keep the ball and waste time for the last 6 or 7 minutes. What does Lee Wallace do? Spank the ball from left back up to Waghorn, who loses the header against their centre half. 20 seconds later Nir Bitton thumps the ball in the bottom corner to make it 2-2. We still did alright in extra time, but they had 5 shots on target and scored 4 goals. Life's a bitch sometimes.
Happy to have won us the title lads, but how Celtic finished 3rd I have no idea. Their squad is ridiculously strong for the league we are in. Joao Carvalho on loan, Griffiths, Bitton, Dembele, Rogic, Sinclair, Vacha, Okore, S**tanislas**, I could go on. All would walk into our squad. I'd be amazed if they are as bad next season.
Make no mistake, there is still a lot of work to be done here.
Here are my thoughts on players currently at the club and what we should do with them.
Alnwick (GK), McCrorie (GK), Hodson (DR), Mbabu (DC), Wilson (DC), Fraser (DC), Crooks (CM), Wallace (DL), Tavernier (DR), Rossiter (CM), Sibbald (CM), Mallan (CM), Holt (AMC), Quitongo (AMR), McKay (AMR), Waghorn (ST), Knox (ST).
Foster, Holmes, Windass, Thompson, Harper, Hardie, Diaby.
Syme, Burt, Dodoo, Kiernan, Kelly, McLennan, Bates, Bouzaig, McCrorie, Lyon.
We've got quality there, but not much depth at all. We definitely need someone to come in and play left wing. I wasn't convinced by Holmes nor Windass, but the latter at least showed glimpses of quality.
We also definitely need cover for Rossiter in central midfield. Someone that can tackle and has high work rate - a midfield enforcer type player.
We also need a left back as there is very little cover for Wallace.
I think young Lee Cormack could play as our third choice striker, even at 16 years of age.
We also have Lee Miller, a very highly rated AMC, that could be introduced to the first team squad.
The squad has terrible concentration, averaging just 10.28, and I think this cost us more than once.
The squad is young, average age being 23.64, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but we need older players. One to act as tutors, but two for better mental attributes. Technically and physically we are looking good, but mentally we are really lacking.
