Season 8 # Champions
Championships like buses. You can't win one then two come along in successive seasons. And this one was big. The all time record points tally is held by Bayern (who else?) with 91. We were two wins away from equalling it!
Just for posterity we scored 78 league goals and allowed 26, comfortably the best defensive record
Going into the penultimate game Schalke were 2nd and we had already won the title but we still won 4-1 at their place such is the season we had. In the end we were 14pts clear of a good Dortmund side and an incredible 32 pts ahead of Bayern Munich.
Dortmund currently have Pochettino in charge and they won the Europa League. Schalke meanwhile have a very good side but Munich might be going into meltdown. Jurgen Klopp unsurprisingly given their position lasted little over the season halfway point. In his place they have mande Ronny Deila head coach. No I have no idea why either but I don't see them threatening to come back at us short term with that appointment.
So we look dominant domestically but how about Europe and the Cup? Well we have sort of written off the Cup as there always seems to be a fixture squeezed in between a couple of important league and ECL games. Inevitably I rotate the team heavily and this time without success.
The low point though was the Champions League campaign. We all but had our group in the bag when we lost the last group game to Monaco. It reversed our positions in the table and we went through to the next stage as unseeded runners up. We then drew the one team I didn't want, Pep's Man City. And just like Atletico did to us the year before we were outclassed. But it's the Monaco game that really undid things. Had we been seeded and able to regain momentum in the latter stages I like to think things may have been different. Anyway it remains a nut for me to crack in this save.
Players, players, players
The squad is simply excellent. It has been sometime now since we've had a troubled misfit or made a transfer market mistake. In saying that we are fairly inactive choosing more to keep and develop what we have than covet others. I took the precaution this season of paying Giglioli and De La Fuente much improved contracts in an attempt to keep them from being distracted. As you can see, their worth to us is very great indeed.
I have two players lined up to come in on free transfers which in itself I find remarkable. One of them is Barry Short from Crystal Palace. He is 24 and has been capped by England 5 times. I will probably have to sell another midfielder to find room for him but he reminded me so much of Paul Scholes that I couldn't walk by the deal. The other is Mario Cruz, a 20 year old Mexican wonderkid left back. I wouldn't call that position unsatisfactory, we don't have any position deemed weak, but with Jonas Hector having turned 33 there is an opening around the corner.
I may add one more player. I have my eye on a young Bayern winger and if I prize him away I think it will only hurt them more. Plus his nationality is German. This deal though would require minor squad surgery. Again I would need to sell a player so as not to have too many plus it would mean using De la Fuente as an out and out striker, not an inside forward. Much to consider with this one. On the one hand I want to go all out and win the Champions League but on the other I don't want to unsettle what I already have.
Doing exactly what I posted in my last tactical update and bossing it. FM17 for the first time bending to my will and not the other way round. Loving that.
