Overcoming the Barricade at the top of LIGA BBVA
VALENCIA C.F. SAD 14 JUNE 2020
SEASON IN REVIEW or Why is Pretecf so damn angry?
The U19 squad with 108 points won their 4th consecutive title. During that same period, Valencia Mestalla took 3rd, 3rd, 1st and now with 84 points a 2nd place finish in LIGA adelante. Atletico flew off to a great start in LIGA BBVA this season and suffered their first loss in match 16 against Valencia (of course) but their schedule may have played a role as they beat R. Madrid in match 17 and lost to Barcelona in match 18. They were unable to repeat their first half and Valencia claimed their third consecutive title.
The Spanish Cup has not included any highlights for Valencia since I arrived to lead the club. This season saw that change.
So, why am I angry? It is not even our bad draw for the knockout of the Champions Group.
Bayern has given us a hard time every time we have faced them. This failure was certainly painful and has lead to some plans to make major investments into the club. So, while this was frustrating, it is not the source of my anger.
But, rather, when you title your save around beating R. Madrid and Barcelona and you manage to top the table for the third consecutive time, one would think that you are at least close to your goal, right? We beat Barcelona for the Spanish Cup crown this season and that should add just a bit of enjoyment to the season, right?
Well, all the joy kind of goes out the fucking window while you wait the next 6 days for the Champions League final for Barcelona to beat Real Madrid 2-1 in extra time. That kind of put a damper on things.
So, the next question has to be, "What are you going to do about it?"
The squad was pretty good this year, but we really suffered from the injury bug. Going down the list of matches played you will find Juan Diaz. Juan is an 18 year old striker with 27 appearances, 19 goals and 6 assists. Juan was scheduled to play all of his matches with the U19 squad this year except as an emergency fill-in for the first team. In fact, Juan will spend next season with Valencia Mestalla. Obviously, I cannot say that he is not ready for this level, he is just not the most ready for this level. The grand experiment of allowing Matomane to go on loan before ascending to our first team was successful. He scored 20 goals for the not so vaunted offense of Zaragoza and one might even say he single-handedly kept them in the top league this year. But, Juan is our best example of the health troubles we had this season. Our captain and best defender Mustafi did not finish among our first 11 in appearances due to a 4 month injury. Gaya finished another season by suffering a long term injury just to add a worry for our offseason.
So, we are going to spend some money. There was a LD in the Portuguese Premier (Jorge) who lead that league in Player of the Match awards who will be joining Valencia in two weeks. We are currently scouting for a new DC, hopefully, to move into our top 3 but I would settle for a top 5 addition. Finally, I have decided that Oblak, despite being named the Goalkeeper of the Year in our league, will not return as our number 1 keeper next season. He has a listed value of 18M. But we were joined midseason by Tolga Akbaba from Bursaspor in Turkey. By the end, he had started 12 contests with 9 clean sheets allowing 4 goals and had a few exceptional performances including the final of the Spanish Cup against Barcelona.
I guess this save is not done yet...
