My 2nd season Arsenal side are quite dominant against some teams in the league but true to real life we sometimes have issues breaking down the weaker sides. I had an idea to play two central midfielders as inverted wing backs to allow us to take control of games where the opposition just sit back and defend.
Rabiot is naturally left footed, Lemina, right, and both are quite defensively minded and comfortable with the ball. The main idea is to be able to have numbers in the middle to recycle the ball better if needed and also to have more players in the middle that are capable of moving the ball and hit that killer pass if needed.
1.Rabiot and Lemina tuck inside as Sunderland have all of their players behind the ball. Rabiot who is in possession of the ball drags out Manquillo towards him which leaves Alexis open with a potential one on one situation against Jones. There’s also an option for Ozil to collect the ball between the midfield and the defence whilst Lacazette can run in behind the defence for a pass from either Ozil or Sanchez. Rabiot is better on the ball than our standard left back (Gibbs) so a through ball to Ramsey is also possible.
2.Neither Lemina nor Rabiot played an active role in this build up but had a crucial part to play. Koscielny plays the ball to Ramsey who plays in Chamberlain behind Van Aanholt for the ball to be played out for a corner once Van Aanholt got back to cover. I believe that Rabiot is taking up a good position as he’s available for the pass from Koscielny, if he receives the ball I think something similar to picture 1 would happen with defenders getting dragged out of position allowing for gaps behind. Lemina is placed centrally and making a run forward, Ramsey could either pick him or Chamberlain to play his pass to. His starting positon occupies Djilobodji which allows Chamberlain to run in behind. Lemina is also arguably the better option to receive the ball as he could turn and play in Ozil or Lacazette.
3.In this image Rabiot and Lemina and placed extremely central with Ndong being dragged out of the two banks of four allowing us to penetrate the defence easier. Lemina has the ball and can either choose Ramsey (Yellow) or Rabiot (Pink) to get the ball to Xhaka who has the space to love into and pick the through ball to Chamberlain, Alexis or Lacazette.
4.Having four players in the centre of the pitch once again drags out of position for us to take adavatage. This time Ozil drops deeper and takes the ball off of Ramsey, Lemina exploits the space behind Rodwell and plays in Lacazette.
Have you had any success in playing players outside of their natural position?
