Season 2019/20 Review
So, I've finished my fourth season in charge and second season back in Serie A and it has been a funny old year. As you can see from the various posts above, it was a tough year as I constantly tinkered with tactics to try and get some consistency, and while results certainly improved after switching to a short passing defensive mentality, we still couldn't really find any consistency. Here is the final table:-
Three places and six point better off than last year, and we actually conceded 10 fewer goals as well so the defence tightened up slightly. The only issue with that was, we also scored fewer goals. I am putting this mainly down to an injury hit season from our main man, Alberto Cerri. He suffered an Achilles problem early on and we lost him for 6 months, and once he came back he then missed a further 6 weeks with another problem. Despite this, he was again our top scorer with 8 goals. Here are his stats in his two seasons back at the club:-
I'm sure that if we could keep him fit, our goals for column would've been much better. Unfortunately the injury has knocked his stats slightly, however when he came back he still hit the back of the net regularly so hopefully it wont have much long term impact on him. Some bigger teams are circling but he's happy, and is tied down for another 3 years so I should be able to keep him. Hes probably one of the main reasons Ive kept going with Parma.
Here are our results for the season, just to give an idea of our inconsistency:-
Despite the results, we actually played quite well in most games but poor finishing and defensive errors constantly let me down. Here is one example of a typical match:-
Alberto came off the bench to make it more respectable, but this is a typical performance away from home. Dominant in possession, more chances but an early goal lets us down and then we concede more soft goals. This was common for us this season, Id set the team up with a plan and then a few minutes in poor marking means its out the window.
This is a typical home performance:-
At home we were much better this year, but again poor finishing let us down. Torino are a very good team but they couldn't live with us on the day, but we hit the woodwork, missed a penalty and were let down by the strikers (this was during Cerri's period out). Penalties were a real issue for us, with us missing all 5 we were awarded in the season, but conceding all 6 we gave away.
Going forward, Ive been given £8m to spend, and it seems more players are interested in joining this year so hopefully we can add some quality to the squad. In January I did bring in a new CB for £4.5m after missing out on him the summer before when he went to Lazio.
He hasn't started amazingly, but my coaches love him so hopefully he can develop next year.
Ive also agreed the signing a 21 year old Croatian CB who looks good so hopefully that's my defence sorted for the foreseeable.
On a personal note, I was offered interviews at Fiorentina and Inter, and the job at Sassuolo but turned them down. Going forward however I may consider a move to a bigger club at some point if we don't make some progress at Parma.
My interest in this save has been up and down recently due to the tactical issues, but hopefully I can have a strong summer and really build on what we have done so far, especially now we have had 2 years of TV money coming in and are in a really good financial position.
Thanks for reading, any questions or (more likely) advice let me know.
