As planned I didnt make wholesale changes to the squad. So there is only one signing to speak of, the signing of veteran Argentine forward Dario Cvitanich on a free transfer. Was surprised we could get him in on a senior contract and didnt have to use one of our designated player spots to bring him in. He immediately joins as our best striker.
Due to a lack of pace in wide areas I have decided to use this 5-2-1-2 formation to start with, settled on a counter/fluid combination after some promising results in preseason. But we'll get to that shortly.
The system revolves around getting the ball to Ilsinho and Fabinho on the flanks and them hitting as many balls into the box as possible. It seems like all my goals in preseason have come from this sort of scenario with either Picault or Cvitanich on hand to turn in a cross.
A relatively mixed bag, although we turned it on in the big games. We played a full strength XI against LA Galaxy, Colorado Rapids and Vancouver Whitecaps and came out of it with 2 wins and a draw. The one result that stands out however is the 4-1 loss to Miami, this is a bit of a misnomer; all 4 of their goals came via set pieces, and we ended up with more than 2x their shots and bossed possession. So although the loss itself is disappointing it's not as bad as it may look. So all in all I'm optimistic for the season ahead, can't complain with the standard of most of those results! All against clubs supposedly better or at least on a par with us in the MLS.
Still have Edu for now, he is on the "Season ending injury list" so has not been registered for the league. However, with our 2 open DP spaces and lack of other signings (partially due to a lack of funds) it seemed a waste to let him go on a free given his quality. The fact he is American is also a bonus as we are nearing the limit on "International" (Non-US) players.
Will probably update again in Jan, this will just be a quick run through season to help myself to understand the various drafts/rules the MLS throws up.
